How did Alabama football team get there mascot the elephant?
Q. Because I don't really picture Alabama an elephant. It's so weird I want to know how it happened.

A. In the 1930 Alabama-Ole Miss game, Coach Wallace Wade started his second string in the first quarter. They were still bigger than the Mississippi first string but Ole Miss was hanging tough. Sports writer Everett Strupper, of the Atlanta Journal, wrote "At the end of the (first) quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity." Several other writers referred to the Alabama linemen Red Elephants and the name stuck. That is how Alabama came to be associated with elephants. Now, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant fittingly named Big Al.

Grad student in Alabama needing a student loan to pay bills. How much can I borrow?
Q. I live in SC, but will attend Auburn in Alabama. Probably I'll get an assistantship which will give me an out of state waiver. I know that when you get a student loan, they allow you to borrow up to the full cost of tuition, right? Well, will I be able to borrow the out of state cost, so that I can use the extra to pay for personal bills?
Asked by slimjimcu - Mon Mar 23 11:09:54 2009 - Financial Aid - 7 Answers - Comments
A. It depends on your finances before grad school and how many hours you are taking, but I was staying in state and got like $15,000 or $20,000 a year as a grad student. The feds decide how much you're eligible for but your school decides how much to give you.

How does child support work in the state of Alabama?
Q. My boyfriend and I are no longer together. Since our seperation and even before he hasnt done much to support our son. To make a long story short, What all do I have to do in order to obtain Child Support? I live in Alabama and I wasnt quite sure how it worked.
Asked by Katelyn Lindsey:) - Tue Dec 1 20:12:02 2009 - Marriage & Divorce - 4 Answers - Comments
A. If his name is on your son's birth certificate, then you can just file. If his name is not on the birth certificate, you'll have to get a paternity test. Once you have proof that he's the father (cause there is no marriage) then you can file for child support. You'll need to have an attorney file the paperwork with the court. The amount of support is based on the income of both of the parents. There are certain percentages based on your income compared to his etc... For example if he earns more than you then the percentage he pays will be higher. Either way he's going to pay something. You can also make the support retroactive to the time when he "abandoned" his child (left the home) or if he never lived with you then you can… [cont.]

A. Well, Frankfort, KY to Huntsville, AL (one of the northernmost cities in Alabama is 318.89 miles, 5 hrs 11 mins. If it's going to be such an awful trip then don't go. No one says you have to participate in extracurricular activities. And before you make a decision whether to stay or go you should have all the details.

What is the legal age to rent a hotel room in Alabama?

A. I used to work in hotels and the legal age to rent a room is 18. However hotel chains can set their own minimum age requirements. There are a lot of hotels (mainly major chains and in places like Myrtle Beach) that will require you to be 21. Most hotels will require a major credit card for the reservation and for the deposit during your stay. do not use your debit card!!! Here is why, you can pay with cash even though you used the credit card for your reservation and your deposit however they pre-authorize the card and put a hold on the amount of the stay and the deposit. They do not charge the card however the bank/credit card company will hold that amount and you cannot spend the money. If you use your debit card that could get you into… [cont.]

what are the best conditions for a mini banana plant in alabama?
Q. i live in alabama and have recently obtained 5 miniature banana plants. they range from 1 inch tall to 2.5 feet tall. I am unsure whether or not to put them each in a pot so they can come indoors for winter or if i should put them in the ground. i understand that they get rather tall and that they need a lot of nutrients and sun but i am most concerned with the planting or potting issue. If they need to be in a pot, what size?

The trees wither in the winter but, they have several spouts from the same root that grows back. Now due to our climate I wouldn't expect the fruit to mature enough to eat. Good luck

A. Usually Pre K, all you have to do is have a degree in Early Childhood Education. Some schools offer this program in a bachelor or master level that includes certification. I recommend making sure you complete this program. Or, check and see if the state even requires a cert. This way if you have a degree outside this area you can just take a few courses and get an alternative or emergency certificate. Check it out:

What is the website for the Alabama education petition against BP?
Q. I heard a radio commercial this morning asking people to sign a petition online. It was for getting BP to pay Alabama schools, because of the tax revenue loss and thus school budget cuts that have resulted from loss of tourism. But I can't remember the website, and I'm having trouble finding it through Google. I think it was something like Save Alabama Students. I really can't remember, but that's my guess. Does anyone know what website this is, or where I can sign such a petition?
